Some facts about each borough and Harlem:
- New York, NY (Manhattan): The "island of many hills" as the word, Manhattan, is translated from the Lenape language, was established in 1625, and in the following century, became an essential part to the formation of the United States of America. Currently the most densely populated county in the US, with almost 26,000 residents per square mile, Manhattan has become the heart of New York City's bustling metropolis.
- Brooklyn, NY: The first municipality in what we currently recognize as New York State, the village of Breuckelen was added in 1646 by the Dutch West India Company. After being separated into a consistently fluctuating number of cities and towns, Kings County and Brooklyn became one independent city in 1896. In 1898, it became a part of New York City and is currently its most populous borough.
- Bronx, NY: A name that refers to its river, the Bronx was named after Jonas Bronck, whose 500 acre farm in the mid 1600s was situated between the Harlem and Bronx Rivers. It is the only borough in NYC situated primarily on the US mainland, instead of on an island, and it is currently the 4th most populous borough in the city.
- Queens, NY: Originally named after the Portugeuse wife, Catherine of Braganza, of King Charles II of England, Queens became one of the original 12 counties of New York State in 1683. Currently the 2nd most populous borough in the city, it is the most ethnically diverse county in the US.
- Staten Island, NY: Named Staaten Eylandt by Henry Hudson after the Dutch Parliament in 1609, it was not until 1667 that Staten Island became a part of the New York colony. While it is the least populated of the 5 boroughs and sometimes called the "forgotten borough," the Staten Island Ferry is a great tourist attraction, and allows riders to view, for free, the Status of Liberty, Ellis Island and NYC skyline as it travels between lower Manhattan and Staten Island.
- Harlem: As the first European settlers in 1637 were Dutch, they named this famous neighborhood, Nieuw Haarlem (New Harlem), after the Dutch city of Haarlem. Taken over by the city of New York in 1873, the area experienced a growth in population when train lines connected it to the rest of the city in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s-1930s further expanded its fame with the emergence of great artistic productions by its African-American population, from literature to music.
