Some facts about each Italian landmark:
- The Coliseum: Originally capable to seat 50,000 sepctators when it was completed in 80 AD, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests other public spectacles for its nearly 500 years of use. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering and contines to draw millions of visitors each year.
- Venice's Gondolas: A classic Venetian boat, the gondola, it is now mainly used for tourists. Even today, transportation within the city remains, as it was in centuries past, entirely on water or on foot. Because of this, Venice is Europe's largest urban carfree area.
- Leaning Tower of Pisa: 5 years after contruction of the freestanding bell tower began, the tower began to lean due to its poorly laid foundation in 1178. Finally completed in 1360, it now leans at an angle of 5.5 degrees with a weight of 14,500 metric tons.
