The Alamo Bookends
The Alamo is widely recognized as a symbol of heroic courage in the fight against oppression, it began as a small Spanish Mission run by Franciscan missionaries, strategically located on the El Camino Real, "the Kings Highway." The infamous battle peaked at dawn on March 6, 1836 under the attack of the Mexican army, led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. All of the Amano occupants died except women, children and one man. The most famous defender present was Davy Crockett. It was the battle cry of "remember the Alamo" that later spurred on the forces of Sam Houston at San Jacinto.
This priceless heritage of Texas was designated as a National Landmark in 1960.
